The NFL…in Haiku – Week Four

For much of my…errr…esteemed career, I’ve faced constant criticism for “over-writing,” i.e. showing a propensity for being unnecessarily verbose, using many words where fewer would suffice.

As a challenge to myself, and in an effort to provide an extreme answer to those that question my way with words, this season I proudly present “The NFL…in Haiku.”

With the ancient Japanese poem structure allowing for a mere three lines and 17 syllables, I imagine summarizing each week’s game in such brief fashion should provide a welcome respite from my traditional overstuffed prose.

San Francisco 49ers at St. Louis Rams (35-11, San Francisco)

Kap back on track, Gore
Goes for a C-note and more.
The Rams have issues.

Baltimore Ravens at Buffalo Bills (23-20, Buffalo)

Apparently, teams
Can score on the Ravens. Bills
Find endzone twice, win.

Cincinnati Bengals at Cleveland Brown (17-6, Cleveland)

Bengals: Pack comeback
Yields Browns letdown. Ohio
Teams are 2-2.

Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions (40-32, Detroit)

A track meet from the
Motor City. Reggie Bush
Has found a top gear.

New York Giants at Kansas City Chiefs (31-7, Kansas City)

Chiefs have already
Doubled their wins from last year.
It’s October 1st.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Minnesota Vikings (34-27, Minnesota)

In London, the bell
Tolls for Big Ben. Steelers still
Searching for first win.

Arizona Cardinals at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (13-10, Arizona)

Patrick Peterson
And a pair of picks. Glennon’s
League debut spoiled.

Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars (37-3, Indianapolis)

Colts struggle early,
Still roll. And it gets worse for
Jags: Denver is next

Seattle Seahawks at Houston Texans (23-20 OT, Seattle)

‘Hawks own second half,
Force OT, stay perfect. Matt
Schaub’s Twitter picked off.

New York Jets at Tennessee Titans (38-13, Tennessee)

Titans win game, but
Lose signal caller. New York’s
Best team is the Bills.

Philadelphia Eagles at Denver Broncos (52-20, Denver)

Not a bad month for
Peyton. 4-0 Broncs beat
Chip at his own game.

Washington Redskins at Oakland Raiders (24-14, Washington)

No more Ashington,
‘Skins find “W.” Raiders
Scoreless after 1st.

Dallas Cowboys at San Diego Chargers (30-21, San Diego)

Rivers fills up stat
Sheet, throws for 400 yards.
After, catches some.

New England Patriots at Atlanta Falcons (30-23, New England)

Brady sharp as Pats
Weather Falcons late surge. But
Wilfork? Out the year.

Miami Dolphins at New Orleans Saints (38-17, New Orleans)

What a difference
A year – and a Head Coach – makes.
Saints now 4-0.
